Treftadaeth wrth ei Gwaith
Cynhaliwyd ein trydedd sesiwn Treftadaeth wrth ei Gwaith ar ddiwedd mis Mai. Dan wybren las ddi-gwmwl â’r gwanwyn ar ei anterth o’n cwmpas, fe gawson ni wythnos dra chynhyrchiol i’w chofio, a hynny unwaith eto gyda chymorth cwmni Tŷ Mawr Lime a chontractwyr y safle IJ Preece, a dderbyniodd yn agos i 20 o wirfoddolwyr.

Heritage at Work
Our third Heritage at Work week took place at the end of May.  Under clear skies and with spring in full flourish around us, we enjoyed a hugely productive week aided once again by Ty Mawr Lime and our site contractors IJ Preece, who accommodated nearly 20 volunteers.

Y tŷ’n dechrau ail-ymddangos
Ar ôl cael ei guddio ers blynyddoedd dan sgaffaldwaith, llenni plastig a tho haearn rhychog, mae’r plasty canoloesol wedi dod allan o’r diwedd o’i drwmgwsg mewn crysalis o waith dyn (a menyw).  Yn ei wisg ddisglair o wyngalch mae’n datgan ei bresenoldeb yn eofn unwaith eto ar ochr y bryn i bob un sy’n teithio ar hyd y cwm. Erys digonedd o waith i’w wneud y tu mewn a’r tu allan iddo, ond mae’n bleser gennym adrodd bod y dasg ddyrys o danategu’r talcen gorllewinol wedi dod i ben yn llwyddiannus. Roedd y llethr y tu cefn i’r talcen hwnnw wedi cwympo i gyfeiriad yr adeilad, a bu raid inni waredu tunelli dirif o bridd. Mae’r ardal hon yn cael ei sefydlogi bellach â chaergewyll llawn cerrig. A’r holl waith atgyweirio pren wedi gorffen bellach, mae ein plastrwr cadwraethol wedi bod wrthi’n gosod haenau o galchblastr ar y parwydydd mewnol ac yn atgyweirio rhannau o’r plastr gwreiddiol. Mae yna ardduniadau plastr hefyd sydd wedi cael eu hail-greu gan ddefnyddio plastr calchblastr ffibrog.

The house emerges
After years under scaffolding, sheeting and a wriggly tin roof, the medieval hall house has now emerged, as if from a long sleep in a make shift chrysalis.  With its sparkling coat of white lime wash, it again makes a statement on the hillside, to all those travelling the valley road.  There is still plenty of work to do, both inside and out, but we are pleased to report that the tricky task of underpinning the west gable has gone smoothly.  The hillside behind the gable had collapsed towards the building and countless tons of soil had to be removed. This area is now being stabilised with gabions full of stone. Now that all the timber repairs have been completed, our conservation plasterer has been busy applying coats of lime plaster to internal walls and doing patch repairs to the historic plaster. There are also areas of plaster decoration which have recreated using a fibrous lime plaster.

Prentisiaid Crefftau Treftadaethol
Pleser o’r mwyaf yn ystod y gaeaf a’r gwanwyn oedd croesawu pedwar prentis crefftau o Sefydliad y Tywysog. Treuliodd pob un ddwy wythnos ar y safle, yn perffeithio ei sgiliau ac yn dysgu gwersi gwerthfawr gan ein seiri maen a phren arbenigol. Mae’r math hwn o brofiad yn y byd go iawn yn rhan anhepgor o hyfforddiant pob prentis, ac rydym wrth ein bodd o feddwl ein bod yn gallu rhoi hwb i grefftwyr a chrefftwragedd sy’n cychwyn ar eu gyrfa yn y sector treftadaeth.

Heritage Craft Apprentices
Over the winter and spring we were delighted to welcome 4 craft apprentices from the Princes Foundation.  Each spent two weeks on site, honing their skills and learning from our expert stone masons and carpenters.  This sort of real world work experience is a vital part of any apprentices training and we are pleased to be able support craftsmen and women, who are starting out in their careers in the heritage sector.
